My Birth Story

Friday, January 4th was my official due date and was the day we scheduled my induction. I had experienced high blood pressure for about four weeks prior so the doctor wanted to go ahead and get him out since I hit 40 weeks.

We arrived at the hospital at 8:00am on the 4th. The nurse that would be working with us for the day, Caroline, took us back to our room and started getting everything set up. I put on the robe and cuddled up in the hospital bed. She started my IV and antibiotics for being Strep B positive around 10:00am. At my appointment on Wednesday, I was 3cm dilated and 50% thinned so they didn't check me right away because they figured not much had changed since then. It wasn't until about 10:30am until they started the Pitocin. I was having a few contractions before they started it but nothing that I could feel. I still couldn't really feel the contractions after the Pitocin either. Pitocin is a gradual thing that they elevate during the day. Caroline had gradually elevated it until I started to feel them around 2:00pm. Meanwhile, my parents had gone to lunch and returned. My mom, hubby, and I played some cards and we all just hung out watching T.V.

Caroline told me once I got my epidural that the doctor would come in to break my water sooner which would progress labor. I, along with my husband and parents, were getting antsy with waiting all day with little action so I opted to go ahead and get the epidural thinking things would start progressing a little faster. The epidural crew came in at about 3:00pm and my contractions were about a minute and a half apart. I really wasn't in that much pain but I wanted to start seeing progress.  I had no pain from the epidural and felt the numbness almost immediately. They even give you a button to push as often as every 15 minutes in order to keep the pain away.

I tried to dose off here and there but I was just bored for the most part. The doctor finally came in and broke my water around 5:00pm. It was no big deal and I couldn't feel a thing. Caroline put me on oxygen around 5:30pm because his heart rate was starting to fluctuate. Two and a half hours later around 7:30pm, Caroline's shift was coming to a close so before she left, she checked me and I had only progressed to about 4-5cms but was now 100% thinned. Really? Almost 12 hours later and that's all I had progressed. What had I been doing all day? Anyway, Caroline checked out and Emily checked in.

My parents again had left and returned from dinner and learned that there hadn't been much progress. They became antsy and decided around 8:45pm to head down to Starbucks. It was going to be a long night. At 9:00pm, the doctor came in and checked me and I was at 9cm but part of my cervix still was present. Whoa, so in an hour and a half, I had gone from 4cm to 9cm. SWEET!!  The room started to be prepped and supplies were prepared for delivery. Emily went over the pushing instructions and tried to get me prepared. It looked as if the end was near. We'd definitely would be having him before midnight...so I thought. Of course, my parents were called to return ASAP. They didn't wait all day to miss it. Ha! At about 9:30pm, my left side was completely numb while I could feel everything on my right side and in my lower back. We called the anesthesiologist to try and fix my epidural as the little handy button was doing nothing. She manually injected more meds into my epidural and nothing helped. The nurse also injected pain meds in my IV to try and help.  I finally flipped sides and BAM.. the pain was gone. Awesome!

10:30pm had rolled around and I was fully dilated and ready to push. My first push took place at 11:00pm. I pushed for every contractions until midnight. They made me take an hour break while sitting straight up and down. During this hour, the lower back contractions were back and at a whole new level. Again, the button was doing nothing and it was too late for any other actions. I was SOL and would have to just push through the contractions.

My hour break was over and doctor came in to inform me to start pushing again at 1:00am. She announced that we wouldn't be stopping again until he was out. I pushed and pushed and pushed. He was face up so he was having a lot of trouble getting under my pelvic bone and the doctor couldn't rotate him. He was stubborn...clearly. They kept yelling that he was so close. After hearing that for a whole hour, I lost all faith that he was close at all. Ha. After two attempts of vacuuming him out and a whole crew of nurses holding my head, legs, and a knotted sheet for tug a war, he finally arrived at 3:19am. He was what doctor's refer to as being "stunned" at delivery. The NICU crew were called immediately (which I believe is routine when using the vacuum) but they were needed. He didn't start breathing for what seemed like forever but probably was more like 5 minutes. It was so scary because all I wanted to hear was his scream. He peed on the NICU crew and then finally we started to hear some moans and grunts. They cleaned him up, let me see him, and took him down to the NICU. Daddy went with them where he got to cut the umbilical cord. Wyatt had a subgaleal hemorrhage which is blood outside the skull. They monitored it for 24 hours and even ordered a head ultrasound for clearance Sunday morning. Everything checked out normal and we finally were able to have him in our room Sunday afternoon around 2:00pm. We were then discharged from the hospital Monday night around 6:00pm.
